Shenzhen takes first place in late-night snack sales volume among Chinese cities in the first half of 2020, according to a report released Monday.

The report was published by Meituan Research Institute, a social science research institute set up by Meituan Dianping, a leading on-demand service provider in China.

According to data, in the first half of 2020, the national late-night snack index was 16.4, which means that about 16 of every 100 food orders were made late at night. Citizens in new first-tier and second-tier cities in southern China are most keen on late-night eating.

In the first half of 2020, the country’s sales volume of late-night snack delivery orders increased by 20.5 percent year on year. Shenzhen, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Beijing are the top five in terms of transaction volume.

Despite the impact of the pandemic, the number of orders for late-night snacks from barbecue spots surged, statistics showed. In the first half of 2020, a total of 2.31 million barbecue orders were recorded on Meituan, up 14.4 percent over the first half of 2019.

Crawfish has become the most popular late-night snack, said the report. In the first half of this year, consumers made 6.59 million orders of the mudbug on Meituan. Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou and Shanghai accounted for the highest proportion of crawfish orders during the late-night snacking period.

According to big data calculation, the sales of late-night snacks in China reached 756.88 billion yuan (US$111.56 billion) last year.
