Shenzhen-based tech giant Tencent started service of its largest data center cluster Friday. It is self built, located in Qingyuan, Guangdong Province, and has the capacity to house more than 1 million servers.

The cloud computing data center covers an area of 26.6 hectares, equivalent to 40 standard soccer fields, is so far the largest new infrastructure project in South China, Shenzhen Special Daily reported Saturday.

The center will put in place 200 new digital technologies in cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence and blockchain, and become a core node connecting with the technology centers in Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Hong Kong and 200 other nodes to form a data network covering the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and influencing Southeast Asian countries.

Using Tencent’s fourth-generation T-block technology, the data center modules can be delivered in a standardized and productized form, making the complex data center construction as simple as putting together building blocks.

In addition, the data center also uses Tencent’s first self-developed Star Lake servers.

Tencent Cloud announced the Star Lake server platform based on the second-generation AMD EPYC processor at its Global Digital Ecosystem Conference at the end of last year.

According to Tencent, Star Lake adopts advanced thermal siphoning technology to improve maximum load efficiency by 50 percent. It is designed to optimize cloud computing, storage and networking requirements, and effectively meet 98 percent of Tencent’s cloud application scenarios.
