New ‘Nine-Tiered Pagoda’ exhibitions open in Pingshan

Two new exhibitions of the “Nine-Tiered Pagoda: Spatial and Visual Magic” project opened at the Pingshan Art Museum last weekend.


The cross-disciplinary project invited nine groups of artists, nine architects and nine designers to form nine temporary teams to provide art for the exhibitions. A featured component of ancient Chinese architecture, the pagoda has a special structure, with each tier telling a different story. These stories, spaces, and designs are closely intertwined with each other into a superimposed whole, formulating the external image and spiritual core of the exhibitions.


“Nine-Tiered Pagoda: Spatial and Visual Magic,” launched by curator Cui Cancan and architect Liu Xiaodu this year, is a hands-on project that mixes ideas, methodologies and tools.


Space and design are also a kind of recreation of the exhibitions and the works. They grant the exhibitions a myriad of variables and possibilities and determine how visitors see the exhibitions, in terms of sequence and pace.


The “Display and Replay: Solo Exhibition of Li Qing” and the “Unity Is Strength: Solo Exhibition of Polit-Sheer-Form Office” exhibitions under the project opened in October and will run until Feb. 21, 2021. The two new exhibitions are:


‘My Poet — Exhibition of Mao Yan and Han Dong’

As the third exhibition of the “Nine-tiered Pagoda” series, “My Poet” illustrates the interactions between artist Mao Yan and poet Han Dong. In 1997, Mao painted a portrait of Han, a work that embarked on a journey of interactions between painting and poetry as an example of the integration of the history of art and literature. The exhibition centers on Mao’s paintings and Han’s poems and maxims, and architect Wang Hui was invited for the exhibition space design.


The maze-like exhibition hall offers a tranquil and pure feeling of reading. “Mao Yan and Han Dong symbolize a wonderful blending of different disciplines, just like the frequent exchanges of all fields in the cultural arena in the 1980s in China,” said curator Cui.


Mao was born in Hunan Province in 1968 and graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1991, majoring in oil painting. He currently lives and works in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. Han was born in 1961 and has written more than 40 books of poetry, short stories, novels and essays, and directed one film and one drama.


‘Cinema Paradiso: Solo Exhibition of Li Binyuan’

As the fourth exhibition of “Nine-Tiered Pagoda” series, “Cinema Paradiso” is a love poem, or more precisely, a depiction of emotion. The exhibition features nine video works by performance artist Li Binyuan, and architect Wu Linshou was invited to design the exhibition hall. The “Cinema Paradiso” exhibition recounts the chain of events in Li’s life. Architect Wu strikes visitors with both joy and sadness by coupling sacredness with darkness in the space.


Li was born in Hunan Province in 1985 and graduated from the Department of Sculpture, Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2011. Through his performance-art works he explores physicality, material, conceptual cognition, and the social values that intervene in the social fabric of everyday Chinese society. He explores urban and rural spaces, from the very public context of the street, to natural sites, and remote post-industrial locations.


The closing date for the two new exhibitions has not yet been set.
