The “Whispering Ink” exhibition showcases a series of Zhang Shulin’s creative ink paintings.

The concept of “new ink painting” emerged in the early 1980s and its core precepts are to further explore expressiveness in painting, eliminate the traditional narrative and ideographic functions, and develop a new realm of art. The new ink painting is characterized by compound brushwork techniques combined with the precise control of tone.

A student of master Wu Guanzhong (1919-2010), Zhang gets inspiration from nature, looks for representation in the abstract, draws from the exploration of Western paintings and integrates innovation into the new ink painting inheritance. In addition, he doesn’t paint specific objects, but uses ink and color to evoke great imagination of the original form and then build a surrealistic dreamlike effect.

In Zhang’s ink world, the flowing life grows and changes, sometimes whispering or floating. Viewers can, therefore, feel a sense of tranquility and a profound feeling of life. For more than 40 years, his meticulous creations have been evolving.
