“We can feel the difference between old and young, established and emerging artists in styles but we can’t draw a line to separate them because their styles overlap, mix and change,” said Chen Xuxia, a researcher of the art museum’s collection department.

“History is like a stream running forward. Today’s changes can be traced in yesterday’s exploration. An art museum should record the current efforts and explore new opportunities for the future. That’s why we chose ‘endless stream’ as the theme of this exhibition for this special year of 2020,” said Chen Xiangbo, director of Guan Shanyue Art Museum. Chen, who is renowned for his delicate gongbi (meticulous brush technique) paintings of flowers and birds, is experimenting in creating abstract paintings, and he presented two pieces at the exhibition.

During the pandemic, many artists stayed home and sought new artistic techniques for their works. Chen Zhuofei, who also excels in gongbi paintings, applied fresco techniques to his gongbi paintings.

Lu Jia’s artworks

More than 70 ink paintings created by artist Lu Jia in the past 20 years and oil paintings, illustrations, caricatures and poster designs made in the 1980s and 1990s are on display until June 15.

Born into a painter’s family in Guangzhou, Lu was instructed by masters Guan Shanyue and Li Xiongcai. In the early 1980s, he worked as a newspaper art editor in Shenzhen and then became a professional painter at the Shenzhen Fine Art Institute in 1987.

Many of Lu’s ink paintings feature old Guangzhou architecture and traditional housing interiors to express his longing for the past simple life. He once said that both in art and in life, he felt that he was wandering between new and old, East and West, black and white, thick and thin. The style of his ink paintings is experimental, with a strong modern taste.
