HK violinist to play pop, classical music | Dec. 28

Hong Kong String Orchestra’s artistic director Yao Jue will lead her orchestra to play Shostakovich’s “Chamber Symphony in C Minor,” “Butterfly Lovers Concerto” by Chen Gang and He Zhanhao and five Hong Kong pop songs.

Yao’s professional career has been punctuated by widely acclaimed performances throughout Asia, Europe and the United States. She was a council member of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the chairlady of the Academic Affairs Committee from 2000 to 2006 and a council member of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council from 2005 to 2010. Currently, Yao serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund and a member of the program committee of the Hong Kong Arts Festival.

Yao graduated from the Juilliard School in New York where she studied under Dorothy DeLay. She has performed numerous concerts and at music festivals worldwide. Music critics have employed phrases such as “technically impressive and intensely moving,” “impeccable technique,” “captivating,” “poetic,” “stylish,” and “lustrous” to describe her performances.

Yao founded the Hong Kong String Orchestra in 2013. She plays a 1713 Stradivarius violin.
