“Magritte’s Room: Song Ling’s Creative Trajectory in 30 Years,” an exhibition reviewing the past 30 years of Hangzhou-born artist Song Ling’s career, is being held at the Hive Center for Contemporary Art in OCT-LOFT.

The exhibition includes Song’s 1980s ink painting series “Human · Pipeline,” in which images of humans and pipelines are interlaced in the form of surrealistic schema, revealing the conflict of human nature in the era of industrialization.

“White Pipelines”

His 1990s ink painting series “The Meaningless Choice?” is also presented here, featuring portraits of animals such as cows, pigs and sheep. Song said these docile animals represent modern people, signifying their plight of being controlled. Some animals, however, have sharp teeth, which indicate the awakening of a rebellious consciousness.

His recent “Magritte’s Room” series pays a tribute to Rene Magritte, a Belgian surrealist artist well-known for creating a number of witty and thought-provoking images. The “Magritte’s Room” series features animals fighting in a small room with the painting composition inspired by Magritte’s “The Listening Room.” Song said modern people are ambitious and prone to fighting when they do business, which is different from the meek and gentle sheep in his 1980s paintings.

Song Ling

Born in Hangzhou in 1961, Song studied at the China Academy of Art in Zhejiang in 1980 and was very interested in Western contemporary art, especially surrealism and pop art. In 1985, his “Human · Pipeline” series was exhibited at ’85 New Space, one of the most important exhibitions of the ’85 New Wave Art Movement. In 1987, Song immigrated to Australia and continued with his artistic style while also trying out other creative methods such as mixed collage, acrylic on canvas, and more.
