Themed “Expanded Animation,” the Fourth Shenzhen Independent Animation Biennale has not only added two more exhibition venues but also features many installations within the venues.

Produced by Li Zhenhua and He Jinfang, the biennale’s curators are Cao Kai, Tang Yong, Yang Jing, Xue Feng, Suh Jin-suk, Holly Roussell and Daniel Franke. The word “expanded animation” was proposed by German media theorist Siegfried Zielinski who argues that history should be viewed from a global perspective where culture, technology and geography are intertwined. For this biennale, the producers and curators intend to push the boundaries of animation and explore new media, video art and video games.

The biennale has six sections in five venues. “Video Collage — Found Footage — Shared Moving Image,” “Throw Your Shadows,” “Sculpture Animation: Image, Media and Realistic Landscape” and “Code to Material” can be seen at C2 in the North Area of OCT-LOFT.

“Video Game: Cohabitant” is being held at Shape of Water in the South Area of OCT-LOFT and at Extra Time inside Sea World Culture and Arts Center in Shekou. The first session of the screenings was held at B. Park in OCT-LOFT on Dec. 9, while another session will be held today at Artron Art Center.

At the C2 exhibition hall, videos by artist Nam June Paik (1932-2006) are being shown in the “Video Collage — Found Footage — Shared Moving Image” section. As a pioneer in video art, Paik’s artwork and ideas were a major influence on late 20th-century art and continue to inspire a new generation of artists.

“Throw Your Shadows” is an immersive video installation by Augustin Rebetez utilizing scary stop-motion images, lights and sound to create a dizzying atmosphere. “Sculpture Animation: Image, Media and Realistic Landscape” and “Code to Material” both feature interactive installations.

Visitors can play video games on laptops in the “Video Game: Cohabitant” section at Extra Time and Shape of Water. Yang Jing, this section’s curator, has installed bunk beds and a tent in Extra Time to recreate the scenario of playing games in college.
