Free English talk on architecture biennales| March 14

This year, Shenzhen will witness another Bi-City Shenzhen Biennale of UrbanismArchitecture (UABB), but before it, there will be an avalanche of other biennales and triennales across the globe: Milan, Chicago, Sao Paulo, Lisbon, Oslo, Tallinn, Seoul and many more. All are trying to capture the urgencies of our time through the discourse of architecture and design. Taken together, they represent what is at stake in design today.

Design Society, as a design platform and inspiration for the creative industries in China, is ready to present and engage with the world’s most ambitious events in the field. You are invited to an evening of learning, to grasp the mission of design in 2019.

Hosted by Ole Bouman, director of Design Society, the event will invite Tom Daniell, professor of architectural theory and criticism at Kyoto University, and Zhang Yuxing, director of UABB’s academic committee, to talk about biennales Thursday night in Shekou.

Daniell was previously head of the Department of Architecture at the University of Saint Joseph, Macao.

Zhang, the founder and lead designer of ARCity Office, is also a researcher at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Shenzhen University with multiple identities such as poet, curator, critic in fields of architectures, cities and arts.

Bouman, former creative director of the UABB in 2013-14, was the director of Netherlands Architecture Institute. He taught architecture and design at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Hong Kong.

The event is free but each applicant will be charged 20 yuan and the fee will be refunded after they either participate in the event or cancel before March 14.
