When you imagine the city, what do you see? Do you see a particular place? A map? Or perhaps you see a 3-D rendering from Google Maps? However, just as the human body exists as flesh and bones, so too the city exists as living streets and neighborhoods. When we commute to work or hang out at a coffee shop, each of us brings the city to life.

The “Urban Flesh and Bones: Futian Edition” is a series of tours that take you through the alleys and iconic neighborhoods of Futian District. Handshake 302 introduces you to the flavors of Shuiwei, the unknown history of Huaqiangbei, and the symbolism of the central axis. If you are 16 years or older, join Handshake 302 for an afternoon of rediscovering the city we all love.

This Sunday, Handshake 302 will lead a tour of Shuiwei, which literally means “enclosed by water.” During the tour we explore the importance of water to local culture, as well as the contemporary Shuiwei Village. The tour begins at the Fumin Metro Station, tracking how Shuiwei transformed from a water-centric village to a land-based urban neighborhood.

An anthropologist by training, Mary Ann O’Donnell has lived and worked in Shenzhen since 1995. An environmental designer by training, Wu Dan brings an eye for color and a passion for the city to Handshake 302 projects. Independent curator Liu He ran the public education program of the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of ArchitectureUrbanism. Today, he designs interactive education programs for students and curious adults. Sculptor Zhang Kaiqin received MFA degrees from both Central Academy of Fine Arts and the Pennsylvania Institute of Art. Since 2010, she has worked as a public artist in Shenzhen.
