Free Sunday concerts in September

Four shows will be held free of charge at Shenzhen Concert Hall every Sunday afternoon.

On Sept. 1, guqin player Rui Yanming and her five students will present a concert in collaboration with local xiao (a type of Chinese flute) player Duan Yu. Rui, a silver award winner at the Youlan Yangchun National Guqin Contest, has held multiple concerts and released several albums. The concert will present guqin solos, group performance, songs accompanied by guqin as well as a guqin and xiao duet.

On Sept. 8, renowned pipa player Fang Jinlong will give a lecture/concert to the joy of Chinese music fans. He will give a humorous and easy-to-understand introduction to Chinese instruments and music, illustrating his ideas with a live performance.

On Sept. 15, young pianist Zhao Yangmingtian, a doctorate graduate from Northwestern University, Chicago, will perform a “Chinese Impression” piano concert in collaboration with local musician Yin Yan. The program will include familiar tunes such as “Jasmine Flower,” “My Motherland” and “Pearl of the Orient,” as well as Liszt’s “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6” and “No. 13.”

On Sept. 22, the performers from Shuofeng Chamber Orchestra, led by director Zhang Yaoshu, will present a concert in collaboration with percussionist Yu Lei. With all members graduating from prestigious music conservatories in China, the troupe founded in 2014 is the only professional Chinese chamber music group in Shenzhen. Besides beloved tunes like “Kangding Love Song,” the troupe will premiere four Chinese chamber music pieces.
